Direct answer

How should I set up and test my device for a remote MRCPCH theory exam?

If you have an approved remote MRCPCH theory sitting, use the exact computer, network and private room you will use on exam day to complete every TestReach system check. Current RCPCH requirements include a personal desktop or laptop, stable bandwidth, webcam, built-in microphone, speakers, one monitor, no VPN or virtual machine, and closed background apps. Read the admission document in UK time, prepare original photo ID, clear the desk and keep the official support routes available.

Key points

  • Complete every current TestReach system check on the same personal computer, network and private room planned for the examination.
  • Verify the admission document's UK time, correct paper link, original photo ID and any approved adjustment before exam day.
  • Use one screen, close background applications, avoid VPNs, virtual machines and tethering, and follow only official support instructions if technology fails.

A remote MRCPCH examination removes the journey to a test centre, but it makes the candidate responsible for a controlled room, compatible equipment, a tested connection and the correct login sequence. The safest preparation is therefore not a generic laptop check. It is an end-to-end rehearsal using the real device, network, room and instructions.

This guide covers remote delivery of Foundation of Practice (FOP), Theory and Science (TAS) and Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP). It was checked against current RCPCH and TestReach material on 27 September 2026. Requirements can change, so the live RCPCH page, TestReach instructions and your admission document take priority.

First confirm that remote delivery is approved

Remote invigilation is not an unrestricted alternative that every candidate can select. RCPCH applies eligibility criteria and asks for evidence at booking. This article begins after the remote place has been approved and paid for.

If you are still deciding between delivery methods, use the MRCPCH online-or-test-centre guide. If the remote request depends on an examination adjustment, follow the separate MRCPCH reasonable-adjustments guide.

Do not build a remote setup around a provisional request. Check the booking confirmation and admission document so that the component, delivery method and timing all refer to the intended sitting.

A successful remote setup is a matched system: approved sitting, correct time, compatible device, stable network, private room, verified identity and completed system checks.

Use the LIVE setup sequence

LIVE is a PaedVault editorial checklist, not an RCPCH rule:

  1. L - Login and local time
  2. I - Internet and installed application
  3. V - Video, voice and verified identity
  4. E - Environment and exam-day rehearsal

The order is deliberate. A fast computer cannot rescue the wrong login time; a good connection cannot rescue an unacceptable room; and a tidy room cannot rescue an untested secure browser.

L - Confirm login details and local time

RCPCH says the admission document provides the UK start time for remote candidates. It is the candidate's responsibility to convert that to the correct local time and be ready at the stated registration time.

Build a small time record containing:

FieldValue to confirm
ExaminationFOP, TAS, AKP Paper 1 or AKP Paper 2
Official dateDate shown in the admission document
UK registration/start timeExact time and whether GMT or BST applies
Local timeIndependently converted local date and time
Link or access codeCorrect item for that paper
Approved extra time or breakExact wording in the admission document

Do not convert only the hour. A large time-zone difference can also change the local calendar date. Recheck the conversion close to the examination in case the UK or local daylight-saving status changes.

Remote candidates may receive separate links for different papers. RCPCH specifically warns that AKP Paper 1 and Paper 2 links can look similar. Match the paper name and scheduled time rather than opening the newest-looking email.

Follow the admission document's login time. RCPCH warns candidates not to attempt access earlier than their registration time because this may prevent access. Generic TestReach material may describe the connection queue, but the individual RCPCH instruction controls when you should join.

I - Check internet and the installed TestReach setup

The current RCPCH remote-invigilation page lists minimum connection requirements of:

  • at least 2 Mbps upload speed;
  • at least 10 Mbps download speed; and
  • ping below 25 milliseconds.

Tethering is not supported. RCPCH strongly recommends a direct Ethernet connection. If Ethernet is not possible, the candidate should use the position with the strongest stable Wi-Fi signal.

These numbers are minimum technical conditions, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. A single speed test can miss intermittent loss, contention and router instability. Run the official system check, then repeat ordinary connection observations at the same place and approximate time of day as the sitting.

Control avoidable network load

Before the exam:

  • arrange for household members not to stream, download large files or restart the router;
  • prevent operating-system, cloud-sync and application updates from starting unexpectedly;
  • confirm that the chosen Ethernet cable and port work;
  • keep the router powered and accessible without leaving the examination room during a paper; and
  • avoid changing provider, router, room or connection method after a successful final check unless necessary.

These are risk controls, not extra RCPCH eligibility rules. The official system check remains the decisive technical test.

Install and update TestReach early

RCPCH says candidates receive system-check communications before the examination and that those checks must be completed. The live page also warns that the TestReach application may require updates.

Use the application and system-check link supplied for the current sitting. Do not rely on an installation retained from a previous examination diet. An old app icon does not prove that the current secure-browser version, access code, permissions or camera path will work.

Complete each required system check when instructed. If a check fails, use the official TestReach or RCPCH support route while there is still time to resolve it.

Current computer and peripheral requirements

As checked on 27 September 2026, RCPCH lists the following remote-invigilation requirements. Always compare this table with the live page before the sitting.

ComponentCurrent published requirement
ComputerPersonal desktop or laptop; work devices are discouraged
Processor/OSIntel Core i3 or equivalent; Windows 7+ or macOS 10.10+ as currently listed
ScreenAt least 13 inches and 1024 × 768 resolution
Monitor countOne screen only; external or dual-monitor use is not permitted
WebcamVideo throughout; maximum resolution 1280 × 720
AudioSpeakers and a microphone built into the desktop or laptop
Headset/earphonesNot permitted unless the Theory Exams team has given permission
Network configurationNo tethering, VPN or virtual machine
Software stateBackground applications closed; supported stable operating-system release

The apparently unusual phrase "maximum resolution" for the webcam comes from the current RCPCH specification. Do not silently substitute a more powerful camera and assume it will be accepted; test the actual camera through the supplied check.

Why a personal computer is safer than a work device

RCPCH says candidates must use a personal desktop or laptop and does not recommend a work device. Corporate devices and networks may include administrator restrictions, firewalls, endpoint security, forced VPNs or background services that the candidate and support team cannot disable.

If the only available device is managed, do not wait until exam day to discover the restriction. Contact the official support route and obtain a compliant alternative. Passing a casual webcam test in a browser does not prove that the secure application can close protected processes or use the required ports.

One display means one display

The TestReach secure-browser check verifies that external monitors are disabled. Disconnect spare screens, docks and display adapters rather than merely turning a second monitor off. Then run the official check in that exact hardware state.

Do not reconnect a dock on exam morning for charging or Ethernet unless that dock was part of the successful system check and does not expose another display.

V - Verify video, voice and identity

Remote invigilation requires continuous audio and video. The invigilator also completes identity and environment checks before granting access.

Webcam

Position the camera so that your face remains visible in the normal sitting posture. Check lighting at the actual examination time: a window that is harmless in an evening test may backlight the image in the morning.

RCPCH's candidate instruction sheet says that an integrated camera may require a mobile phone or mirror for the environment check. Follow the invigilator's direction, then place any unapproved device outside the workspace when instructed. Do not keep a phone on the desk merely because it was used during the room scan.

Microphone and speakers

The current RCPCH specification requires a built-in microphone and does not permit a separate headset or earphones without prior permission. Confirm that the input meter responds, that the correct microphone is selected and that the speakers are audible without another audio device connected.

If an approved reasonable adjustment changes the audio setup, follow the written approval and admission document rather than the default rule.

Original identification and admission document

RCPCH currently accepts specified original photo-and-signature identification, including a qualifying passport, driving licence or national identity card. A photograph, scan, photocopy or digital copy is not accepted as the identity document. Documents not in English require the translation specified by RCPCH.

Prepare the original ID and a printed admission document in advance. Check the expiry conditions and exact details on the live exam-day page. If there is a concern about ID, contact the RCPCH Help Centre before the exam rather than asking the remote invigilator to make an exception.

E - Build a compliant examination environment

The room must be private, quiet and free from interruption. RCPCH advises candidates to be completely alone. Its candidate sheet specifies a distraction-free area with a door that closes, a clear desk or table and no restricted items; a bed is not a suitable workstation.

Use an environment audit:

  • close the door and test whether it can remain private for the whole paper;
  • remove extra devices, papers, books and visible notes;
  • cover or remove material that could be read as examination content;
  • disconnect additional monitors;
  • place the screen, camera, chair and lighting in their final positions;
  • tell household members or colleagues not to enter;
  • prevent pets or deliveries from interrupting;
  • check that power leads cannot be pulled loose; and
  • make the permitted ID, admission document and stationery easy to present.

RCPCH discourages sitting the examination at work. If a workplace is used, it must still be fully private, free from audio and visual disruption, and technically compatible. The live guidance says glass-walled offices and ground-floor rooms with windows are not accepted.

Permitted paper, writing materials and water

The current RCPCH page says remote candidates may have up to two pieces of blank paper and a pen or pencil. Both sides of the paper and the writing implements must be shown during the environment check. At the end, the notes must be shown and the paper torn up as instructed.

Water is permitted in a translucent bottle. Keep only what the current instructions allow; do not infer permission for food, medication, extra stationery or another device unless it is explicitly permitted or covered by an approved adjustment.

Rehearse the whole setup, not only the speed test

A good rehearsal ends with observable evidence:

  1. the TestReach application opens and is current;
  2. the supplied system check passes;
  3. camera, microphone and speakers work in the app;
  4. background applications and external monitors are disabled;
  5. the same network is stable in the chosen room;
  6. the admission document and ID are ready;
  7. the local start time is written correctly; and
  8. household or workplace interruptions are controlled.

The official AKP sample paper uses the current TestReach format and can help familiarise candidates with navigation. RCPCH notes that the FOP and TAS specimens remain on the previous system, so they should not be treated as exact interface rehearsals.

Interface practice is separate from the secure system check. Passing a sample paper does not verify the remote-proctor connection, environment scan or background-process check.

What to do on exam day

Before the registration time

  • confirm the current local time against the admission document;
  • restart only if this was part of the tested routine and leaves adequate time;
  • close background applications using the operating system's process controls;
  • disable VPNs and disconnect additional monitors;
  • confirm power, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, camera, microphone and speakers;
  • clear the desk and close the door;
  • place original ID and the admission document ready; and
  • open the correct link or access route for the correct paper at the instructed time.

During validation

Follow the remote proctor's directions for identity, camera and room checks. Answer through the permitted audio or chat route. Do not begin another application, search the web or move an unapproved item into the workspace.

During the paper

Remain visible and at the workstation. The TestReach candidate guide says the invigilator can communicate by voice or through the in-exam chat. Use those routes if support is needed.

Remote candidates are normally not permitted to leave the workstation during a paper. A prearranged break or extra-time arrangement should appear on the admission document. Do not improvise a break because the next paper starts later.

The MRCPCH time-management guide can be adapted to the timing actually shown in TestReach, including any approved extra time.

If the connection or device fails

RCPCH says the TestReach application can continue through short internet disconnections. For significant loss of access, its current advice is to restart the router and, if the problem cannot be resolved, contact TestReach technical support and RCPCH.

Use the official sequence rather than experimenting with VPNs, tethering, a second computer or an untested network during the sitting. Keep the support details from the admission material accessible in the permitted way.

ProblemFirst principle
Brief connection lossStay in the application and follow the proctor/system instructions
Prolonged connection failureFollow RCPCH troubleshooting and contact official support
Camera or microphone failureUse the official support path; do not substitute untested equipment silently
Secure browser detects an appClose the named process using the system controls and rerun the check
Wrong-paper messageReturn to the RCPCH email and confirm the correct link and scheduled time
Registration details missingContact the examining body as directed by TestReach guidance

Record what happened after the examination while it is fresh, including times and support contacts. If a formal issue needs to be raised, use the current RCPCH complaints route and deadlines rather than relying on an informal account.

Common remote-exam setup mistakes

Completing the check on a different device

A passed check belongs to that device, software state, peripherals and network path. Changing any of them creates an untested setup.

Using a work laptop because it appears powerful

Hardware performance does not remove corporate firewalls, protected background agents, VPN enforcement or missing administrator rights.

Leaving a second screen connected but switched off

The secure browser checks external displays. Physically disconnect additional displays and retest.

Treating a speed-test result as a full rehearsal

Bandwidth is only one dependency. The secure application, camera, microphone, speakers, room, identity and access details must also work together.

Converting the exam time from memory

Use the admission document's UK time and verify the local date, daylight-saving state and paper number.

Keeping revision material in view

Clear the entire visible workspace and surrounding area, not only the space immediately beside the keyboard.

Assuming an ordinary break is allowed

Remote candidates must normally remain at the workstation. Only follow a break arrangement that was approved in advance and appears in the examination instructions.

Final answer

Prepare a remote MRCPCH theory sitting as one tested system. Confirm the approved paper and UK start time, convert it carefully, use a compatible personal computer with one screen, pass every current TestReach check, stabilise the network and create a fully private room. Keep original identification and the admission document ready, follow only the permitted workspace rules, and use the official TestReach and RCPCH support routes if technology fails.

Freeze the setup after the final successful check. Exam morning is not the time to change device, network, camera, operating system or room.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a work laptop for a remote MRCPCH exam?

RCPCH says candidates must use a personal computer or laptop and does not recommend work devices. Corporate administrator controls, firewalls, VPNs and protected background applications may block TestReach and may be impossible to change on exam day. Use the exact personal device that passes the current official system checks.

Can I wear headphones during a remotely invigilated MRCPCH exam?

No, not under the default current rules. RCPCH says a separate headset or earphones are not permitted unless the Theory Exams team has given permission in line with the reasonable-adjustment process. Use the computer's built-in microphone and speakers unless your written instructions explicitly approve something different.

Can I use a second monitor for the MRCPCH remote exam?

No. RCPCH requires a single monitor, and the TestReach secure-browser check verifies that external displays are disabled. Disconnect extra monitors and display adapters before completing the official check, then preserve that hardware setup for the examination.

What internet speed is required for MRCPCH remote invigilation?

As checked on 27 September 2026, RCPCH lists at least 2 Mbps upload, 10 Mbps download and ping below 25 milliseconds. Tethering is not supported, and Ethernet is strongly recommended. These thresholds can change, so confirm them on the live RCPCH page and complete every supplied TestReach system check.

What should I do if my internet disconnects during the MRCPCH exam?

RCPCH says TestReach can continue working through short disconnections. For significant connection loss, follow the current official troubleshooting instructions, which include restarting the router, and contact TestReach technical support and RCPCH if the problem cannot be resolved. Do not introduce an untested VPN, tethered connection or replacement device unless official support directs you.
